How to Tidy Your Home: From Small Steps to a Cozy Space

Kaip tvarkytis namuose: nuo mažų žingsnių iki jaukios erdvės

A tidy home is not just about spotless floors or shiny surfaces.
It’s about lightness, calm, and that special feeling when it simply feels good to be at home.
But where to start when everything seems a bit overwhelming?
And how can tidying become a pleasant part of daily life rather than a chore?

Here are a few ways and tips to help you organize your home more easily.

Step One – Organizing

Before grabbing the vacuum cleaner or a mop, it's worth first organizing your belongings. Why?
Because when every item has its place, cleaning becomes much simpler and faster.

How to start organizing your home?

The Marie Kondo Method

If you want to truly transform your space, you can follow Marie Kondo’s principles:

  • Tidy by category, not by room (e.g., all clothing first, then all papers and books, followed by household items like kitchen tools, electronics, bathroom supplies, and finally sentimental items).

  • Ask yourself two questions:
"Does this item bring me joy?" or "Does it serve an important function in my life?"
If the answer to both is no, it’s time to let it go.

  • Leave sentimental items for last.
They often take longer to sort through because they stir up more emotions, making it harder to decide whether to keep them.

Small Projects When You’re Short on Time

If you don't have a whole day — that’s fine. Start with small wins:

  • One drawer.

  • One cupboard.

  • One corner of a room.

Small projects let you see progress quickly and motivate you to keep going.

Key Things to Remember When Organizing

  • Every item needs a home.
If something doesn’t have a set place, it will drift around and create clutter.

  • Fewer items = fewer worries.
The less you own, the less you need to clean, move, and keep track of.

  • Temporary storage is a trap.
If you put something somewhere “just for now,” it often becomes permanent.
Be intentional with what you choose to keep.

Cleaning After Organizing

Once everything is in order, cleaning becomes much easier and faster.

Quick tips:

  • Start from the top and work your way down.
Clean higher surfaces first (shelves, tops of wardrobes), then move on to the floors.

  • Dry before wet.
Vacuum or dust before using damp cloths or sprays.

  • Let your cleaner do the work.
Spray the product, wait a few minutes, then wipe – this gives better results with less effort.

  • Don't forget the small areas.
Door handles, light switches, cupboard handles – everything we touch daily deserves a wipe too.

Small Habits That Help Keep Things Tidy

  • Walk through your home each evening and put things back in their place.

  • Keep countertops clear – in the kitchen, bathroom, and workspace.

  • After every meal prep, quickly wipe down surfaces.

  • Spend at least 5 minutes a day on small tidying tasks – over time, it becomes second nature.
